Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) are a major clinical problem. An understanding of the clinical aspects of ADRs is a fundamental requirement for any professional in the field of pharmacovigilance. Aims of the course

  • An understanding of the clinical presentation and diagnosis of ADRs in different body systems, e.g., cardiovascular system, in addition to providing sessions on drug safety in pregnancy, oncology and hepatic ADRs
  • Examples of drug classes associated with specific ADRs
  • An overview of immune hypersensitivity mechanisms and their classification
  • An understanding of the principles of causality assessment
  • An overview of drug interactions and the pharmacogenetics of ADRs
  • The role of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics (including genetic and immunological factors) in determining variability in drug response and drug interactions
  • To review the classification of ADRs and pathophysiology according to body system and associated public health burden

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course delegates should be able to:

  • Identify and critically assess the types of adverse drug reactions seen across a range of medical disciplines
  • Apply a structured algorithmic approach for causality assessment of Drug Induced Liver Injury (DILI)
  • Examine and critically reflect on the increasingly important role of pharmacogenetics and personalised medicine approach
