Short Course

Introduction to Pharmacoepidemiology (Online)

Venue

Online

Date

12 May 2027 - 13 May 2027

Course overview

Pharmacoepidemiology is a key discipline in monitoring the post-authorisation safety of medicines.

It is increasingly recognised as a practical tool for supporting risk management, planning post-authorisation safety activities using real world data and generating evidence for key stakeholder decisions across the drug discovery pipeline.

Knowledge and expertise in pharmacoepidemiology is therefore essential for any pharmaceutical company.

Our Introduction to Pharmacoepidemiology course is aimed at introducing delegates to the core concepts of this scientific discipline.

Attendance at this course can be used to provide training for Pharmaceutical Medicine Specialty Training (PMST), especially to support Specialty Capabilities in Practice 6 and 7.

Please note, the course dates and programme may be subject to change.

Aims of the course

  • To provide a grounding in, and analysis of, core principles of epidemiology
  • To show how epidemiological technique are applied to pharmacoepidemiology studies
  • To review the development of pharmacoepidemiology and its role as a clinical science
  • To review modern methods and data sources used in pharmacoepidemiology
  • To develop a critical understanding of the types, assessment and appropriate application of post-marketing drug safety data and their contribution to the marketing, regulatory compliance, safety monitoring and risk management associated with medicines

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course delegates should be able to:

  • Critically analyse the relationship between epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology
  • Define and justify the elements of an appropriate database to be used to conduct a pharmacoepidemiology study of a drug safety issue
  • Differentiate the important features of pharmacoepidemiology studies that allow comparisons within and between data sources
  • Critically evaluate common analytical techniques in the interpretation of pharmacoepidemiology data for pharmacovigilance purposes

Programmed features

  • History and basic principles of epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology
  • Pharmacoepidemiology as a modern scientific discipline
  • Analysis and interpretation of pharmacoepidemiology data
  • Use of pharmacoepidemiology in the detection and investigation of safety signals
  • Pharmacoepidemiology and risk management planning
