DSRU delivers Real World Evidence training to FPM physicians
The DSRU team delivered a very successful one day hybrid training event on “Understanding and Interpreting Studies Using Real-World Data”, at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (FPM). The aim of the event was to introduce real world evidence (RWE) studies to pharmaceutical physicians.

RWE is evidence generated from clinical observational studies, outside of clinical trials and has a key role in decision-making on the safety of medicines. The application of RWE is modernising the process of drug discovery, development, post-authorisation safety and effectiveness and outcomes research. The potential for the use of RWE throughout the entire lifecycle of medicines continues to grow.

Professor Saad Shakir (DSRU Director) opened the event by introducing the principles of observational research and the strengths and challenges of using RWE. Samantha Lane (DSRU Senior Research Fellow) then outlined the different methods used for RWE studies and explained how the best approach should be selected for a given study. Finally Dr Debabrata Roy (DSRU Head of Epidemiology) covered application of RWE in drug safety, including post-authorisation safety studies (PASS) and additional risk minimisation, as well as future use of RWE in expedited approval.

A very engaged audience of pharmaceutical physicians attended the event, both in person and on online, and generated some great discussion during the day. The DSRU is delighted to continue its long-time support of the FPM and to provide essential training for pharmaceutical physicians in aspects of pharmacovigilance.

We hope to hold further events with FPM in the future. Watch this space!
