Pedro Lima

Regions Medical Safety Head, Sanofi

Pedro graduated in medicine in 1992 and completed medical residence in gastroenterology in 1996, both at the University of the Estate of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in Brazil, where he was born and still lives.

In 2008 he decided to move to a dedicated pharmacovigilance role in a biotechnology company, overseeing the Latin America pharmacovigilance system. He sought to develop his pharmacovigilance knowledge and found out about the DSRU’s postgraduate programme in Pharmacovigilance, which is run in association with the University of Portsmouth. He enrolled on the course in 2011 and completed his postgraduate diploma (PgD) in Pharmacovigilance in 2013. He subsequently registered for the MSc Pharmacovigilance and following completion of his research project, became the first student to graduate from the MSc course in 2014.

Pedro has been invited to speak in pharmacovigilance congresses in the European Union, the United States and Latin America more than 30 times, and invitations became more frequent after completing his master’s degree. Since 2015 he has been a regular presenter on the “Global pharmacovigilance regulatory requirements: What’s new?” DSRU module.

Since working for a European company, Pedro feels he has been treated with deference and a special recognition for having high level knowledge about European regulations as well as world class level knowledge of pharmacovigilance topics despite not living in the European Union. This helped his career advancement, despite continuing to be based in Brazil and working remotely in global positions since 2014.

Pedro frequently mentions that his decision to complete the DSRU Masters in Pharmacovigilance was one of the best ones he made for his personal life and career.
