Professor Stephen T Holgate

Professor Stephen Holgate is the MRC Professor of Immunopharmacology at the University of Southampton and Honorary Consultant Physician at Southampton University Hospitals Trust. Professor Holgate has dedicated his career at the interface between basic sciences and clinical application in the fields of allergy and asthma. He is contributing to research which utilises molecular and immunological mechanisms to improve the understanding and treatment of allergy and asthma.
Professor Holgate has an illustrious public service record. He is Chair of the Higher Educations Funding Councils Research Excellence Framework (REF) Main Panel A assessing research quality and impact in Medical, Health and Biological Sciences across UK Universities. He also chairs the Hazardous Substances Advisory Committee, the Board of the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) and, until 2012, chaired the MRC Population and Systems Medicine Board. He currently chairs the MRC Stratified Medicine and Experimental Medicine Grants Panels, the Scientific Committee of the European Respiratory Society and is a member of the Medical Science Committee of Science Europe.
Professor Holgate has received numerous awards, medals and honorary positions from Universities and academic institutions around the world and was appointed CBE in 2011 for services to clinical science.
