Professor Martin Vessey

Professor Martin Vessey, Emeritus Professor of Public Health at Oxford University has had a distinguished career in epidemiology and public health. He has worked mainly in two broad scientific fields, the study of a range of woman’s health issued and the epidemiological approach to evaluating drug safety. He is particularly noted for his work on the benefits and risks of different methods of fertility control. His research also includes studying patterns of disease in postmenopausal women and the work on the epidemiology of breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer.

Professor Vessey’s public service includes being a member of the Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM), various committees at the World Health Organisation and the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He has also chaired the National Advisory Committees on breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening and screening for bowel cancer. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1991 and awarded the CBE for services to medicine in 1994. He also became a Founder Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998.
