Systematic Literature Review on risk factors for myocarditis and pericarditis

  • The aim of this study was to understand risk factors for myocarditis and pericarditis following COVID-19 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines.
  • First we produced a clear, inclusive and transparent search strategy
  • Our search strategy included all observational study designs where myocarditis or pericarditis had occurred post-COVID-19 vaccination and excluded myocarditis and pericarditis induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • Two independent reviewers conducted the literature search and extraction of data.
  • We extracted data from the literature including study design, study period, vaccine of interest, population, number of cases of myocarditis or pericarditis, percentage of cases who were male, age, and the vaccine dose.
  • We tabulated results from this systematic literature review alongside results obtained from spontaneous reporting data to provide a comprehensive review of the occurrence of myocarditis and pericarditis following COVID-19 mRNA vaccination.
  • To ensure our systematic reviews meet the highest standards we utilise PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) checklists and CASP (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme) tool to evaluate these procedures.
