Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, Chairman of NICE and Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Michael Rawlins underwent his undergraduate training at St Thomas' Hospital and his post-graduate training (in clinical pharmacology and general medicine) at St Thomas' and the Hammersmith Hospitals. During this period he also spent a year at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Sir Michael was Ruth and Lionel Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle (1973-2006). Sir Michael’s distinguished public service includes being successively a member (1980-1986), vice-chair (1987-1992) and chair (1993-1998) of the Committee on Safety of Medicines. He is currently chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (since 1998) and of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (since 1999).
